Viorel-Aurel Serban’s education: High School of General Culture Chişineu-Criș, Arad County (1973); Politehnica University of Timisoara, Faculty of Mechanics, Department of Machine Building Technology (1978); doctor engineer (1992); doctoral thesis “Studies and researches on amorphous alloys with special magnetic properties (1992)”, scientific supervisor (2007). Technological engineer, workshop chief (1978-1982) at Electrotimiș Timișoara; researcher (1982-1991) at ICEM Bucharest, Timișoara branch; Teacher: associate assistant (1982), lecturer (1992), associate professor (1996), professor (2000) within the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanics, in the disciplines: Materials Science, Primary Materials and Technologies, Unconventional Materials, Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Metals, Damage Expertise and Diagnosis, Advanced Materials Engineering, Metals and Metal Alloys.

Scientific activity in the field of materials science and engineering oriented in the following fields: Field of development and characterization of new materials: amorphous metal alloys, composite materials, thermocompensating materials, magnetic materials, nanostructured alloys; Field of surface engineering: deposition of protective layers; Field of special heat treatment technologies, technologies for elaboration of non-ferrous alloys, plastic deformation technologies, unconventional technologies, damage analysis. He has published over 250 papers in journals and session volumes, of which 87 in the ISI network, a number of 20 books, manuals, monographs, co-author of nine patents, reviewer of international specialized journals (Surface and Coatings Technology, Coatings, Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, Journal of Thermal Spray Technology, Applied Surface Science, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Engineering Science and Technology, Advanced Ceramics Progress, Tribology International. Rector of Politehnica University of Timișoara (2012-2020), vice-rector (2004-2012) and vice-dean of the Faculty of Mechanics (1996-2004). President of the Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities (ARUT); President of the Commission for “Materials Engineering” and member of the National Council for Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates (CNATDCU); Director of the Research Center for Advanced Materials Processing and Characterization (2007-2012); President of Politehnica Foundation Timişoara (2009 – 2012; 2020); Permanent expert of the Engineering Sciences Commission of ARACIS (2005-2012); Declared professor “Bologna” in 2012 awarded by ANOSR.
