Course Description:
The aim is to introduce the students to the notion of public participation in urban planning. Both theory and practice of the interrelationships between town as a public space and its participative planning are covered. The students get an insight into such relevant topics as the notions of the ’urban’ and the ’public’, the systematic listing of the particular values of a township (including e.g. image guidelines), real estate valuation, and the issues of future urban centres, respectively. The course is carried out as a one-week intensive workshop which includes an architectural research task.

Topics:
This course is carried out as a one-week workshop. Theoretical lectures and practical tasks are delivered, consulted end presented. During the workshop, students will become acquainted with the principles of the community design method and deepen their knowledge of the process of urban design and architectural conceptmaking.

Students work in groups and choose one district in Budapest, the groups analyse aspects of spatial planning and architecture, sociological, cultural characteristics, and have to find two urban spaces - one which is in good conditions to live and use, and the other one in bad condition but with potential to be improved. After the visit and analysis, a conceptual proposal is asked to be made to reinterpret the area that has potential to be improved.

The aim of the one-week workshop is to practice recognizing and dealing with complex and multi-layered urban design and architectural problems; raise awareness of the importance of the close link between architecture and urban design; and recognize the importance of thinking, analysing before the concept is created. We discuss all of this in the light of social inclusion, examining the role of the architect in assessing, interpreting, and satisfying community needs. It also aims to

develop their skills in the appropriate style of graphic processing and presentation of information.

At the end of the workshop, the students will present their work on one Power Point, landscape format, projected and presented by the team. There are no other formal requirements the goal is to have a clear, simple and easy-to-understand, concise presentation style. It is recommended to use schematic site drawings showing functional relationships and 3D visuals illustrating the main masses, but any unique, creative solution is acceptable.

Assessment: The presentation of the task is a pre-exam, exam.
