Szamarkand

Samarkand, a 2750-year-old city, preserves the mythical heritage of the East. It is one of the richest historical cities along the famous Silk Road and the second-largest city in Uzbekistan. Once one of the most important oases along the caravan route from China to Europe, Samarkand, the former capital of Uzbekistan, is one of the finest examples of mature Islamic architecture. One of its most significant landmarks is the Gur-e Mir mausoleum, the resting place of Timur Lenk since 1405, visited by Ármin Vámbéry in 1868. The structure's 26-meter-high ribbed turquoise dome is visible from afar and is particularly remarkable because it seemingly changes color depending on how sunlight falls upon it.
