Obuda University Among the World’s Sustainable Universities
This year, Obuda University was included for the first time in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which assesses the sustainability performance of higher education institutions worldwide. In the international ranking, which examined 2,016 universities from 110 countries, the institution placed 1130th, Rector Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács announced. This result provides feedback that sustainability considerations are appearing in more and more areas of the university’s operations.
Obuda University’s participation in another international ranking is important feedback on the institution’s sustainability efforts. The 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings examined 2,016 universities from 110 countries, among which Obuda University placed 1130th. Among Hungarian institutions, it ranked 10th, and among European universities, 257th.
At Obuda University, environmental awareness is present in many areas, from operational solutions through teaching and research activities to institutional-level coordination, Rector Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács emphasised. The outstanding result was supported, among other things, by energy efficiency measures, selective waste collection, digitalisation and the reduction of paper use, the development of green spaces, and support for electric mobility. In addition, sustainability-related teaching and research play an important role, creating opportunities for the knowledge, attitudes and everyday practices of students and university staff to develop alike.
UI GreenMetric is an international ranking that assesses the sustainability performance of higher education institutions, providing a picture of universities’ environmental and sustainability practices by examining several factors together. The assessment covers, among other things, energy use and climate protection, waste management, water use, transportation, infrastructure, and sustainability-related teaching and research activities. The ranking also takes into account how these factors are integrated into institutions’ everyday operations. The methodology is linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Obuda University intends to continue its measures to strengthen sustainability in the future. Its plans include reducing waste and improving selective collection, introducing water-saving solutions, and expanding green spaces and increasing biodiversity. A further goal is the wider use of digital and smart solutions that can promote more efficient use of resources. Further strengthening the environmental awareness of students and staff is also a priority, the Rector highlighted.
Long-term goals include presenting the university’s sustainability efforts more transparently and more widely. This can be supported by the ESG report and the ESG strategy. At Obuda University, the achievement of sustainability goals at the institutional level is also supported by the work of the GreenMetric Committee and the Sustainability Council.
