OE's Initium Venture Labs Launches Hungary's first WIPO IP Management Clinic for MedTech
Initium Venture Labs, the technology transfer company of Obuda University, has launched the WIPO Intellectual Property Management Clinic (IPMC) in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO). With this programme, Hungary joins the international IPMC network, with a clinic focused exclusively on medical technology. Twelve innovative health technology companies and research teams will receive expert training and mentoring between October 2026 and January 2027.
Twelve MedTech teams, six focus areas
Participants were selected through a competitive application and interview process, based on their innovation potential, IP readiness and commitment to the programme. The cohort covers six areas of medical technology:
- AI-powered diagnostic imaging and clinical decision support
- robotic and minimally invasive surgical technologies
- biomarker-based and point-of-care diagnostics
- digital health and patient adherence platforms
- hospital hygiene monitoring and quality assurance
- medical device innovation for specialised health applications
The teams are diverse. Some are university research groups at the proof-of-concept stage, while others are established healthcare businesses with products already on the market. Some are exploring formal IP protection for the first time, while others already hold registered EU trademarks or have patents pending.
How the programme works
The four-month programme has three components:
Workshops: Participants attend four expert-led online workshops on IP strategy, commercialisation and licensing, patents and trade secrets, and investor readiness.
One-to-one mentoring: Each team is paired with a dedicated IP expert for at least three confidential mentoring sessions, typically six to ten hours of tailored strategy development.
IP Strategic Roadmap: At the end of the programme, each team receives a personalised roadmap that maps its current IP position, protection gaps and future opportunities, together with a prioritised action plan.
All training and mentoring sessions are delivered by WIPO-backed experts with leading experience in IP strategy, patent prosecution, technology commercialisation and international IP protection in regulated health technology markets.
