Egyptian delegation visits our university – focusing on sustainable built heritage

The professional cooperation between the Miklós Ybl Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering and the Egyptian institution continued with the visit of a delegation from Benha University. The collaboration focuses on deepening academic ties through student and faculty mobility, as well as the initiation of joint research programs. On behalf of the university leadership, the two deans of the Egyptian Benha University, Prof. Zeinab Feisal Abd Elkader and Prof. Mohamed Said Mohamed Abd-Elghaffart, were received by Dr. habil. Viktória Sugár, Vice-Rector for Sustainability and Strategic Developments.

The negotiations regarding the deepening of institutional relations, which began last year in Egypt, continued at the Miklós Ybl Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Led by Dr. Zsuzsanna Fáczányi, Vice-Dean for Research, and with the participation of the Faculty's academic staff, the discussions focused on identifying the most promising areas for encouraging faculty and student mobility and launching joint research programs.

Special attention was given to heritage protection and joint efforts aimed at preserving built heritage, including the archaeological fieldwork, architectural documentation, and the development and implementation of modern site management plans for highly endangered Egyptian historical sites. A proposal by the Egyptian colleagues to establish a joint 'Sustainable Built Heritage Workshop' was presented and discussed. This platform would integrate heritage protection, sustainability principles, and the opportunities provided by smart systems into education and research. It would examine key areas such as the adaptive reuse of historical buildings, sustainable building renovation, climate resilience, intelligent conservation and monitoring, and digital access and experience.

In addition to the discussions, the guests toured the laboratories of the Institute of Civil Engineering and the studios of the Institute of Architecture. Subsequently, they delivered a scientific presentation on topics aligned with their primary research areas to an audience of the faculty's academic staff and students.
