A Compass in a Changing World - Obuda University at the THE Asia Summit

In recent years, the growing international visibility and development of our university have garnered increasing recognition across various platforms. This year, Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, Rector of Obuda University, represented our institution at an invitation-only roundtable discussion at the THE Asia Summit, organized by Times Higher Education, held in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as part of the Asian Universities Summit.

Rectors of several highly-ranked universities were invited to the session (based on the 2026 THE rankings): University of Sydney (53), University of Bristol (80), Sunway University (301-350), Universitas Palita Harapan (401-600), Ewha Woman's University (501-600), Obuda University (601-800), Universitas Indonesia (800-1000), and Malawi University of Science and Technology (801-1000).

The session, organized around the theme “Igniting global transformation: Asia’s leadership,” addressed a key issue from a senior leadership perspective: how universities respond to the challenges of a rapidly changing environment while contributing to long-term societal development.

In the invitation-only session titled “The steward’s compass: Cultivating legacy in an age of disruption,” Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács highlighted, in response to the moderator’s question, the importance of preserving institutional values in a continuously evolving context. He emphasized that universities must operate along the principles of public service and societal values, ensuring their academic independence while serving social progress through their educational and research activities.

Regarding institutional identity, he pointed out that Obuda University simultaneously builds on its centuries-old traditions and its modern, flexible operational model stemming from its transformation into a university in 2010—an approach that enables both the stability of core values and strategic adaptability.

Responding to a question on leadership values, the Rector identified three key areas upon which successful leadership can be built: strengthening internationalization, increasing global visibility, and allocating resources in alignment with clearly defined strategic priorities, particularly across key research and development areas. These core activities support the achievement of the university’s objectives and further enhance its position in international rankings, especially within the framework of Times Higher Education.

Obuda University was also present at the event with an exhibition stand, providing opportunities to establish and strengthen relationships with international partners, showcase its educational and research achievements, recruit international students, present its innovation ecosystem, and reinforce its strategic international presence in Asia and worldwide.
