Widespread International Interest in the 3rd Ybl Conference on the Built Environment

The Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Obuda University organized its international conference for the third time. The 3rd Ybl Conference on the Built Environment, held on 16 May 2025, focused on the theme of Sustainable Built Environment. The event featured approximately 130 presentations across twenty thematic sessions, alongside a poster exhibition.

The opening session, conducted in both English and Hungarian, was inaugurated by Dr Zsuzsanna Fáczányi, Vice Dean for Research, who welcomed the participants and distinguished guests: Mr Lóránt Perényi, Deputy State Secretary for Architectural Strategy at the Ministry of Construction and Transport; Dr Viktória Sugár, Vice Rector for Sustainability and Strategic Development; and Mr András Csiszér, Design Director at Zoboki Design & Architecture, who also delivered the plenary lecture.

Dr Viktória Sugár, speaking on behalf of Rector Prof. Dr Levente Kovács, welcomed the attendees and expressed her appreciation that Obuda University, ranked among the 601–800 institutions by Times Higher Education, treats both scientific excellence and societal engagement as top priorities. She emphasized that international scientific events such as this one—marked by broad international interest—are essential for sustaining and enhancing the university's future success.

In his opening address, Mr Lóránt Perényi highlighted the power of community, the importance of shared thinking, and knowledge exchange for a more hopeful future. Referring to the athletic achievements of Gábor Rakonczay, he pointed out that if one person’s determination and perseverance can enable a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, then collective engineering knowledge holds vastly greater potential for shaping a sustainable environment and safeguarding our land, air, and water.

The plenary session was delivered by Mr András Csiszér, Design Director at Zoboki Design & Architecture, who discussed the evolving role, expectations, and challenges of architects. Through practical insights, he presented the firm’s high-tech design concepts that are consciously built upon the interconnections between people and nature, as well as interpersonal relationships.

With more than 300 participants, the event once again attracted significant attention on the international stage of engineering sciences. The conference covered a wide range of topics, featuring contributions from industry representatives, faculty members, students, and researchers of Obuda University. One session showcased fresh theoretical research from students of the Doctoral School of Architecture, Design and Technology, launched in autumn 2024. In addition to representatives of Hungarian architecture and civil engineering programmes, participants included experts from several international institutions such as the Austrian Institute of Technology, the University of Auckland, Krakow University of Technology, the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, and universities from Campania, Silesia, and Transylvania.

Key supporters played an essential role in the successful organization of the event: the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, the ICOMOS National Committee of Hungary, and media partners Magyar Építőművészet (Hungarian Architecture), Magyar Építőipar (Hungarian Construction), and Országépítő journals.
