Obuda University takes yet another Significant Step towards Strengthening International Defence and Technology Cooperation: Research Cooperation with Saab AB

Óbuda University has taken another important step in strengthening international defense and technology relations. A research cooperation agreement has been signed between the university and SAAB AB. The document was signed by Rector Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács in the presence of a representative of the Swedish company on March 19.

Saab AB is an internationally recognized Swedish company that primarily develops and manufactures defence, aerospace and security technology solutions. The partnership aims to implement joint research and development projects, primarily in the fields of augmented reality (XR), artificial intelligence and defence applications. The agreement aims to enable Obuda University and Saab to jointly implement research and development activities, primarily in the fields of augmented reality (XR), artificial intelligence and defense applications. A key element of the partnership is that the research will be carried out with the active participation of MSc and PhD students, providing them with the opportunity to gain experience in real industrial and defense projects.

Students will work on topics such as AI-based 3D content development and integration of XR-based training systems, which play a key role in modern military education and maintenance processes. The results of joint research will be presented in the form of prototypes, validation measurements and scientific publications. The agreement closely aligns with the strategic goals of Obuda University, among which the development of dual-use technologies, participation in the NATO DIANA innovation ecosystem and strengthening defense and space industry relations occupy a prominent place. The university’s research portfolio – including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, robotics, drone technology, hydrogen-based energy supply and defense healthcare – provides a complex foundation on which international industrial cooperation can be built. The cooperation is also of particular importance from the perspective of education of future generations. The involvement of MSc and PhD students will enable future engineers and researchers to engage in cutting-edge defense and technological developments during their studies, while coming into direct contact with industrial players. In recent years, Óbuda University has been consciously building an innovation ecosystem, including the Science Park infrastructure, the Space Lab initiative, and the OUVC and Initium technology transfer systems, which enable the practical utilization and market introduction of research results. The agreement signed today is further proof that Obuda University is capable of establishing internationally competitive, industrially relevant research collaborations, contributing to the strengthening of domestic and European defense innovation.
