Obuda University as a Highlighted Participant at the THE Central Asian University Forum
The largest Central Asian university forum organized by Times Higher Education (THE), held in Tashkent on October 15-16, is regarded as the region's most significant higher education conference. Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács, representing Obuda University, presented on the university’s investment and innovation strategy. Nearly 200 experts from 20 countries, including the United States, China, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, gathered at the 300-participant forum, with Obuda University recognized as a prominent participant, as stated by Prof. Dr. László Gulácsi, Vice-Rector for Research.
Phil Baty, THE’s Director of Global Affairs, highlighted the diversity of the event, which brought together 60 leaders of international educational organizations and representatives from 97 universities. This unique assembly provided an exceptional platform for networking and collaboration among higher education institutions worldwide.
“This academic year marks an anniversary for Obuda University, celebrating 15 years since its founding and 145 years when considering the legacy of its predecessor institutions,” noted Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács during his presentation, analyzing the university’s position and role. He emphasized that while the institution started from a humble place 15 years ago, it now celebrates a true milestone as it ranks among the top 601-800 universities worldwide in THE’s 2025 rankings. The Rector explained that only a few years ago, the university was not even ranked, but with an improvement of over 400 positions, it has now become a leading university not only in Hungary but also in Central Europe.
“We have progressed step by step, following a well-thought-out strategy,” said Prof. Dr. Kovács, stressing the university’s commitment to not only high-quality technical education but also to supporting innovation. This is complemented by an investor-focused approach, which has led to the implementation of a new operational model.
Prof. Dr. Kovács emphasized that the Central Asian region holds strategic importance for Obuda University, explaining that the university is developing exemplary solutions from which both universities and national economies can benefit greatly. He noted that while Asia and Europe were once connected by the Silk Road, today, innovation can serve as an equally mutually inspiring bond.
A panel discussion on the dilemmas and opportunities faced by young universities addressed topics of "attractiveness." It explored what makes a young university appealing to students and how it can integrate seamlessly into international networks.
Participating in the discussion alongside Obuda University were leaders from relatively young but successful institutions, such as Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, Constructor University in Bremen, and the University of Leeds in England. The Rector of Obuda University and his counterparts agreed that, in addition to offering compelling programs and high-quality education, consistent networking efforts are crucial. Prof. Dr. Kovács emphasized that Obuda University places a strong emphasis on innovation and an investor-oriented approach, aiming to attract a wide array of partners from academia and the business world.
