Prof. Dr. Gabor T. Fichtinger

Prof. Dr. Gabor T. Fichtinger, Canada Research Chair at the School of Computing, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, is generally regarded as one of the principal developers and promoter of the concept known as computer-integrated surgery and image-guided therapy. His innovative approaches led to the development of remotely navigated robotic devices biopsy, guided tools to perform minimally invasive ablation and various other innovative percutaneous therapies relying on medical imaging and real-time image guidance.

Prof. Fichtinger has contributed over 750 publications to the literature, cited over 15,000 times with an h-index of 65. His highest cited paper (from 2016) is considered to be the definitive scholarly guide to medical robotics and computer-assisted interventions.
As former recipient of the title “Cimzetes Egyetemi Tanar” of Obuda University, Prof. Fichtinger has visited the Antal Bejczy Center for Intelligent Robotics numerous times, and gave research seminars and lectures, consulted faculty, staff and students. He was the key enabling person to establish the strategic research and mobility cooperation agreement between Queen’s University and Obuda.

Gabor Fichtinger made pioneering contributions to the development of open-source software for computer-assisted medical intervention and surgical technologies, facilitating their rapid translation to clinical practice and medical education. His work in medical robotics and surgical navigation in cooperation with Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University paved the way for many modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. He is a renowned innovator, and a key, dedicated developer and promoter of 3D Slicer, a free, open-source software toolkit that is used around the world in clinics, education, research and industry alike.
